Clitunno floor lamp by Vico Magistretti for Artemide, 1960s
White matt nickel-plated brass, opaline glass floor lamp, named 'Clitunno', designed by Vico Magistretti for Artemide, 1960s. The lamp features an internal frosted glass sphere produced by “removing two slices horizontally from a smoked glass sphere placed around an inner opaline sphere” supported by a crossed frame of brass plates attached to a metal stem; the large shade is four brass buckles attached to the frame. Clitunno was included in Artemide's Modern Classics, “a witness to the first ten years of Artemide's history and global success of Italian industrial design.” The first year of production of this lamp is 1964. Designed in two versions: 170 cm high with a diameter of 50 cm and a smaller version (this one), 165 cm high and 40 cm in diameter.
Italian architect and industrial designer Vico Magistretti was born in Milan in October 1920. Vico was the son of an architect. He graduated from the Technical College in Milan in 1945. Magistretti was seen by many as one of the most important modernist designers of his time. He lived and worked in Milan throughout his career. He started his career building homes, offices and a church. From the sixties onwards, he focused mainly on interior design. He used bright colors and clear lines in his designs. Magistretti's work is included in the most important museum collections in Europe and America, including the MoMA in New York. Vico Magistretti died in Milan in September 2006 at the age of 85.
